Yuki Minami Brazil:

This is the story of Yuki Minami, who returned to her parent’s farm to take up specialty. Long a specialty supplier in the region, Fazenda Santo Antonio has since invested in the field, in raised beds and in training as part of Yuki’s so-far successful experiment of increasing quality to get better prices. In 2016 Yuki banded together with other farmers in her community – a group of third generation Brazilians of Japanese descent – to form Aequitas Coffee – with their first export being to Crop to Cup in 2018. Last year saw Yuki expanding her export company – Aequitas – by promoting many more neighboring farms, along with experimental microlots. This lot has it all going on – anaerobic fermentation, treated with yeast, and finished as a natural. It is proof that with excellence in partnerships and processing that you can get jammy, fruity, pristine coffees out of Brazil.

Don Isidro Nicaragua:

Don Isidro’s coffee reminds us of mulled redwine found in holiday markets in Belgium, with sweet notes and complex spices. It is the perfect coffee for the magic time between Thanksgiving and the winter holidays. We tried a bunch of coffee from our friends at Gold Mountain Coffee, looking for something fun and different. One lot on the table popped out at us. When we flipped the info sheet over to see the beaming face of Don Isidro, with the lot named “mulled red wine microlot”. We were instantly enthralled, determined to purchase coffee from this happy human. Note from Gold Mountain: It took us several years to track down Don Isidro, who we had heard produces wonderful Caturra coffee at a very high altitude. To keep the watershed clean,Don Isidro followed our example and built waterfilters to clean water after it is used to wash coffee. He funded that project through a quality premium from Gold Mountain Coffee Growers. We’re thrilled that Don Isidro cares about the environment and took the initiative to use his quality premium in this way. And his coffee’s profile is complex and awesome!
